Planning a turnkey blood bank: the 8-week project

A turnkey blood bank project for a 100-200 bed hospital typically takes 8-10 weeks from kickoff to handover. Here’s a realistic week-by-week.

Weeks 1-2: Discovery and design

We visit the proposed site, confirm the room allocation, and produce a written equipment schedule. The schedule includes the centrifuge, refrigerators, freezers, platelet incubator and agitator, plus the consumable starter pack.

You confirm the room allocation with your architect and we issue the room-by-room equipment plan with electrical, plumbing and ventilation requirements.

Weeks 3-4: Civil work

Civil work typically runs 10-14 days. It includes:

• Electrical: three-phase supply, dedicated circuits, earthing
• Plumbing: floor drains, water connections for the autoclave (if part of the scope)
• Ventilation: dedicated exhaust for the centrifuge room
• Access: reinforced door and corridor for centrifuge delivery

Weeks 5-6: Equipment arrival and installation

The equipment arrives, usually in two consignments (heavy items first). Installation takes 3-5 days per major unit:

• Centrifuge: 1 day
• Refrigerators and freezers: ½ day each
• Platelet incubator: 1 day
• Platelet agitator: ½ day

Each unit is validated against the manufacturer’s IQ/OQ protocol. Temperature mapping on every temperature-controlled unit runs for 24-72 hours.

Weeks 7-8: Commissioning and training

• CDSCO inspection and registration: 1-2 days
• AERB survey (if irradiation is in scope): 1 day
• Operator training: 2 days for blood bank staff
• Handover with the equipment schedule, validation reports and service contract

What’s often forgotten

The most common oversights we see:

• Concentrator / UPS for the centrifuge’s electronics
• Backup temperature monitoring with an independent logger
• Calibration of the weigh scale on the donation mixer
• Autoclave and quarantine room if whole-blood processing is in scope

These are simple to add to the plan if flagged at week 1; expensive to retrofit at week 7.
